First Phonics is suitable for a child who first wants to read. It is essentially a tool for the parent to introduce words that are read phonetically - unlike the so called 'look-see' method where words are memorised from visual patterns.
First Creative Writing is aimed at the child who is ready to write creatively. This book offers a variety of topics and models, but in a structured way, so that most answers can be corrected by the parent. Many rules and reasons are explored. Much emphasis is placed on the correct ways of writing sentences. However, the main value of the book is that children have plenty of writing to do and they are reading and writing material of a high standard.
First Comprehension is aimed at children who can read words with what are commonly called consonant sounds, single vowel sounds and easier double vowel sounds. The book has a low reading age and progresses in difficulty with generally uncomplicated sentences. It introduces the concept of reading followed by answering questions on the text. Children are trained to answer questions with 'yes' or 'no' or with a word from the text.
First Handwriting is designed to give children at Kindergarten to Year 2 Level practice in the NSW Foundation Style handwriting. At school all children have handwriting lessons. They are taught correct posture and are encouraged to hold a pen or pencil by the index finger and thumb while resting it on the middle finger.
First Words is for children who want to write words at the pre-school or Kindergarten stage presented in a simple format. One page presents a choice of six words in a box to be written under the correct picture. Turn over to the next page which revises the six words from the previous page. The format changes towards the end of the book where the child writes missing words from sentences.
First Phonic Reading can be used in conjunction with, or as a follow up to First Phonics. It is book of further reading that partly duplicates the format of First Phonics, but presents different examples. These include a number of passages with words grouped in phonic sound families - offering practice in reading as well as comprehension. The answers are presented in multiple choice form. Each word in a box can only be used once. A number of illustrations help a child answer questions, but most solutions are obtained by reading and reasoning.
