' As the headmasters of small rural schools you will become the Captains of the Community – a friend and counsellor to everyone.'
With these words as his inspiration the idealistic and zealous 19 year old Jakob Tonander leaves his loving home in the city to begin his teaching career in a remote country school. It is 1961 and as he sets out he naively presumes his life will be idyllic in this rural hamlet. Instead he finds his life to be a turbulent mixture of bitter-sweet experiences many brought about by painful, complex issues not of his own making. In his everyday interaction with the locals he finds support but also animosity. He falls hopelessly in love but is then seemingly rejected. Along the way he encounters practical jokes perpetrated by the local youths, but unfortunately he is also exposed to the hatred of an older man and this culminates in a fight for his very survival.
