This book, Foundation English: Phonics, provides a systematic approach to enabling children to learn and/or practise voicing sounds that make up English words. It is specifically written for children aged between six to eight years in countries where English is taught as a first language. The sounds are treated individually in units, each requiring children to first read aloud words with the focus sound and identify the sound, thus associating it with its spelling. They are then asked to do one other or more exercises—varying from completing sentences, rhymes or verses, solving riddles or a crossword puzzle, making a word search, and so on—using words with the focus sound to further familiarize them with the sound.

The book provides

  • a comprehensive coverage of phonic sounds;
  • a consistently applied method of facilitating recognition of both word-picture/meaning and letter-sound correspondence;
  • a variety of activities to rouse and maintain interest in the subject; and
  • an answer section, which includes teaching points and explanatory notes.
