Katakana in Topics may be used to supplement existing programs and provides stimulating exercises in vocabulary building for junior and intermediate learners of Japanese.

It is designed primarily for use in the classroom, although it can be used by students working on their own. It can be used as a resource for the practice of basic katakana after it has been learnt, or for advanced students, it can increase the knowledge of vocabulary that is associated with the topic area they may be studying. It can also be used as extension work to cater for students who are working ahead of their classmates.

The workbook contains lists of katakana words in topic areas. Students work through this page initially to establish the meaning of the katakana. The answer section at the end of the workbook can be used to check their work or clarify any obscure or difficult katakana. They then write a passage on the following page which relates to that topic area and in which they ideally incorporate some vocabulary and structures they have learnt on the previous page. This can be checked by teachers or tutors.
