Language, Literacies and Learning: A First Introduction

Too many learners are disengaging from school subjects because the literacy requirements of those subjects are
not being made explicit.

Too many children are unable to demonstrate how much they understand because the language they use is not
the specialist style expected by teachers and examination authorities.

Neither the authorities nor the people teaching subject English can be solely responsible for changing this. It is
the responsibility of those of us who teach the specialist subjects.

Metalanguage is an important part of quality teaching.

Literacies matter.
