Real-Life Bizarre Creatures

A high-interest/ low readability graphic novels and audio CD set designed to motivate young readers! 

The stories included have been specifically written for students who are reading below grade level; for students with reading difficulties; English Language Learners; and reluctant or discouraged readers. Each colourful graphic novel is printed on high quality paper designed to capture and hold student's attention, and the easy-to-read large print and colourful pictures help children feel more confident as they read.

All the stories use high-frequency words and present the students with interesting new vocabulary. A list of difficult words and new vocabulary are found in each booklet. Prior to reading a story, review the words and introduce and practice any unfamiliar words. Print each word on a word wall card and then draw a picture to help students visualise the new words. 

Each story booklet comes with its own "word-for-word" audio recording. Being able to listen to a story before attempting to read it can help the students understand the content of the story ahead of time to be able to better use content clues when they decode unknown words. When students listen to the CD and visually track the words they have a multisensory reading experience as they can hear the words; see the words; and touch each word as they follow along to better understand what they are reading.

The extension activites and reproducible page found in each booklet will help increase comprehension skills and encourage the students to want to read and learn more about each topic.
