Introducing: The Keyboard! Teaching Guide

Introducing: The Keyboard! is a skills-based course aimed at encouraging students to appreciate music as an art form through learning to perform music on the keyboard. ‍It has been designed to meet the mandatory stage 4, NSW Board of Studies, Music Syllabus requirements.

This course presumes no prior knowledge of the keyboard and provides the opportunity for students to develop their understanding of the concepts of music in a step-by-step, logical manner. It provides students ample opportunity to explore the integrated learning experiences of performing, composing and listening – with particular emphasis placed on performing. Students will learn to read and interpret musical notation, perform using both hands on the keyboard, compose music and develop their understanding of the concepts of music through carefully organised listening activities.

About the Author

Born in 1975, Marcel Viera has been studying music since he was six years of age. During high school, he began working as an instrumental tutor and as a performer in Latin American bands. In 1997, Marcel graduated from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music with a Bachelor of Music Education.

Marcel has since performed in various ensembles ranging in style from classical to jazz, rock and pop and currently works as a high school music teacher. He lives in Sydney, Australia with his wife and daughters.
