When I read the info for Seven Days, I thought this was just another cliched “action thriller”: You have blah days to stop blah from destroying blah. By the way, you’re the only person who can do this. And you’re a perfectly normal kid. The same plot, with many spin-offs, appears in countless action series. So if I’m honest with you, I didn’t have high hopes for this book. I thought it was just more of the same.
How wrong can one ten-year-old be?
Benjamin Parker is in no way “normal”. He’s a kid whose parents have split up, with a rich family and a corrupt businessman-dad. And the century old crime Ben has to survive is in no way magical. It’s a robbery and murder (or so it seems?), that has sparked bad blood between two families. This book is a tightly written, no-words-wasted story about rewriting wrongs, crime and how the past can catch up with you. I highly recommend it.
So why don’t I give you a taster?
Ben’s dad is about to go overseas after sealing a lucrative yet inhumane business deal. Ben’s mum is somewhere far away, taking a holiday. And Ben? Our young hero has been sent to his uncle’s home, where he will stay until Dad comes back.
As soon as Ben gets there, he sets a timer. A timer until his father comes back. A timer before he has to go home.
Seven days.
160 hours.
And before the boy knows it, the countdown is on.
What happens in that time, however, is not your average getting-taken-care-of-by-your-relatives-and-their-rescued-pets. So what does happen, then? My lips are sealed – but you can read the book to find out!
I highly recommend this book. Enjoy!
